Frequently Asked Questions
A fire door is a specially constructed door designed to resist the spread of fire and smoke between compartments of a building. The fire rating (e.g. FD30, FD60) indicates the number of minutes the door can maintain its integrity when exposed to fire in a standardised test to BS 476 Part 22 or BS EN 1634-1. An FD30 door provides 30 minutes of fire resistance, while an FD60 provides 60 minutes.
FD30 fire doors provide 30 minutes of fire resistance and are the most commonly specified rating for internal doors in residential and commercial buildings. FD60 doors provide 60 minutes of protection and are required in higher-risk locations such as stairwell enclosures, lift lobbies, and some industrial applications. FD60 doors are typically 54mm thick compared to 44mm for FD30, and they require correspondingly rated frames, seals, and hardware.
Yes. Glazed fire doors use pyro-resistant glass that has been tested as part of the complete door assembly. The glass maintains its integrity during a fire for the rated period (30 or 60 minutes). Glazed fire doors are popular in corridors, reception areas, and retail environments where visibility and natural light are important. The glazing aperture size and glass type must match the manufacturer's tested specification.
Yes, we manufacture made-to-measure fire doors for non-standard openings. These are custom-built to your exact dimensions and are available in FD30 and FD60 ratings, in a range of materials and with glazed or flush options. Lead time is 2-3 weeks from order confirmation. Please contact us with your dimensions for a quotation.
While there is no legal requirement for fire doors to be installed by a certified installer in all situations, we strongly recommend using a qualified carpenter or a FIRAS/BM TRADA-certified installer. Incorrect installation — wrong gaps, missing seals, or incompatible hardware — can completely compromise the door's fire performance. In buildings regulated under the Building Safety Act 2022, a competent installer is effectively mandatory.
Fire doors should be inspected at least every six months, in line with the guidance in BS 8214. Checks should cover the condition of intumescent and smoke seals, door gaps (typically 2-4mm around head and jambs), the operation of the self-closing device, the condition of glazing, and the integrity of hinges and other hardware. Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the Responsible Person has a legal duty to maintain fire doors in working order.
Yes, in many situations. Building Regulations Approved Document B requires fire doors in specific locations, including flat entrance doors, doors to protected stairways, and doors forming part of fire compartmentation. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 requires fire doors to be maintained in commercial and multi-occupancy residential buildings. The Fire Safety Act 2021 extended these duties to the external walls and flat entrance doors of multi-occupied residential buildings.
We offer fire doors in a wide range of materials including paint grade plywood, oak veneer, ash veneer, beech veneer, sapele, walnut, and koto. Paint grade doors are designed to be painted on site, while veneer doors can be left natural, oiled, stained, or lacquered. Each material has been included in our fire test evidence to ensure the door's certification is valid.
All fire doors have a lead time of 2-3 weeks from order confirmation. Doors are delivered on a dedicated transport service to minimise the risk of damage. We deliver throughout mainland UK — please contact us for delivery to Scottish Highlands, Northern Ireland, or offshore islands.
Standard stock fire doors may be returned within 14 days of delivery, provided they are unused, undamaged, and in their original packaging. Made-to-measure and custom-sized doors cannot be returned as they are manufactured specifically to your order. A return collection charge may apply. Please inspect all doors upon delivery and report any damage or defects within 48 hours. Full details are available in our Terms and Conditions.
